Bob says: Also following the book Roots, Radicals & Rockers. English trad jazz obsessive Ken Colyer joined the merchant navy in the early 50s with the sole goal of getting to New Orleans to play with his heroes. It took him months and just about a circumnavigation of the globe to get there. Once he did he jumped ship and overstayed his visa having been taken to the bosom of the veteran musicians he’d crossed the world to find. Immigration arrested him. When he told him the reason for his visit was to study with the local jazz musicians they promptly threw him in jail for six weeks before deporting him. Back in England he formed a band. In time he allowed his banjo player a mid show slot to play a couple of Leadbelly songs on guitar. The banjo player was Lonnie Donnegan. #poetryclub #poetry #poem #poems #poet #poets #poetrycommunity #poetrytribe #words #wordsmith #writer #writers #writersofinstagram #clerihews #clerihew #clerihewday #clerihewpoem #shortpoem #micropoetry #kencolyersjazzmen #kencolyer #leadbelly #lonniedonnegan #skifflife #tradjazz #neworleans #neworleansjazz #jazzneworleans #poemsaboutmusic
