I was stationed at Tyndall in the 90s and fly fished almost daily. One day I was wading in St Andrews Bay and got tired of catching trout so I tied on a Merkin crab and started crawling it around on the bottom hoping to catch a red. Caught a pompano. Caught several over the next few days so I finally started telling a few of the locals at Cogburns about it. They tried to politely tell me I was full of shit since pompano were only caught in the surf in the spring. A week later, there were live baiters standing shoulder to shoulder in my spot just reeling them in. It turns out that it was one of the quick rebound stories from the inshore net ban passed around 1995. What a great lesson that was for me in the value of recreational fiishery conservation activism. So glad to see the pompano still providing great sport inshore down there. Thanks for helping me recall a great memory.
