Raymond Martin claims: Decide a pocket complete of Starboard! King Starboard is a great content with a lot of makes use of and is really effortless to operate with. It doesn’t sand way too well so to get a easy edge, make a template out of plywood initial and then slice out the Starboard using the wood pattern and a patterning bit in a conventional table mounted router. #anodizedaluminum #marinefabrication #welding #weldporn #kingstarboard #skiff #skifflife #gunwale #ladder

Do you flame it to make it glossy? @martinmarinedesign
martinmarinedesign
I don’t with starboard @metalcraftmarine. The router bit leaves a very smooth matte finish that matches the rest of the material.

Is starboard the same as HDPE plastic? I’ve never heard of it @martinmarinedesign

Here is a brief description from the King website @metalcraftmarine: King StarBoard® is the original marine-grade high-density polyethylene sheet and the industry standard. It is the product of a proprietary process called K-Stran™, the most advanced manufacturing process for superior flatness and consistency. King StarBoard® is environmentally stabilized to withstand the harshest marine conditions. It will not warp, rot, or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water.

@martinmarinedesign sounds much the same as what we call HDPE. Love your work mate!

Thanks @metalcraftmarine!!!

Make pattern out of 1/4″ aluminum. Polish edge, it will look like it was cnc’d on a machining center. ?
martinmarinedesign
Thanks for the suggestion @carolina_custom_towers !!! The great thing about using wood is that you can easily modify or fine tune your pattern because the plywood is easy to sand. This is especially helpful when making very large patterns with large rounded sides. I like to use old sanding belts which burnish the edge for a very durable pattern.

@martinmarinedesign I’m a second year apprentice. Your quality and finish is what I strive for when I’m working with stainless or aluminum. Love your posts.

Do you file any of the anodizing off before you start your weld process?
fatboy4130
I remember the first time I left my gas wide open on accident and the seas of anodized slease parted the ways, Never looked back..
martinmarinedesign
I don’t do anything to the anodize before welding @cjubany. And thanks @mack240uz!! Stay open to learning and you’ll have a great career!
